Episode Summary |
|
Lisa is chosen as a semi-finalist in the Reading Digest "Patriots of Tomorrow" essay contest and receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. There, The Simpsons get special VIP passes and take an historical tour of the city.
The morning of the contest, Lisa wanders off to a little-known memorial where she witnesses Congressman Bob Arnold taking a bribe from a lobbyist. Her faith in democracy now destroyed, she tears up the essay she had prepared for the final competition.
Deciding that the truth must be told, Lisa writes a new essay that exposes Congressman Arnold and condemns the politicians in Washington. Alarmed that a young citizen has lost faith in her country, one of the judges notifies a senator, who informs the FBI about Arnold's activities. Arnold is immediately put under surveillance and arrested in a sting operation. Although Lisa loses the essay contest, her faith in the democratic process is restored. |
